How accurate are oximeters?

Pulse oximeter readings are accurate and fast. The majority of oximeters provide a reading that is 2% above or 2% under what your oxygen saturation would be if it was acquired from an arterial blood gas test. For example, if your oxygen saturation reading is 94% on the pulse oximeter, it will probably be between 92% and 96%.

What can affect an oximeter reading?

While oximeters are reasonably reliable, there are a few things that can impact this accuracy such as, nail varnish, fake nails, poor hand circulation.
